Modernize and Improve Existing Applications

Improve the application your business relies on while respecting the work already invested in it. I help review existing systems, prioritize technical problems, and make changes in manageable steps.

For teams working with an existing system

You may have an application that is hard to change, overdue for upgrades, or affected by slow requests and unreliable integrations. A growing backlog can make it difficult to separate urgent fixes from longer-term improvements.

The goal is to understand the system and reduce specific sources of friction. A rewrite is one possible decision, not the default starting point.

A prioritized improvement scope

  • A review of relevant code paths, dependencies, tests, and operating constraints.
  • Framework and dependency upgrades with compatibility checks.
  • Performance investigation based on measurements and reproducible problems.
  • Targeted refactoring, integration repairs, and regression coverage.

The scope and sequence depend on the application's condition. Performance targets and migration risks are established from evidence, not assumed in advance.

Change the system in reviewable steps

We start with the business impact of the problem and inspect the parts of the application involved. Where practical, I establish a failing test or baseline before making the change, then verify the result against it.

Upgrades and architecture changes are broken into smaller steps with explicit checks and rollback considerations. Ruby on Rails is my core specialization; integrations, databases, and JavaScript interfaces are considered as part of the whole application.

Review the fit for your application

The CoachVantage case study outlines existing application work, including feature development and architecture improvements. Bring the system's current versions, symptoms, and constraints so we can discuss which parts of the work match your needs.

Questions about modernization and maintenance

Does modernization require a complete rewrite?

No. We first assess whether targeted improvements or upgrades can address the problem. A rewrite needs its own justification, migration plan, and scope.

How do you approach a slow application?

We identify the affected workflow and measure where time is spent. That evidence helps choose a change and provides a baseline for checking whether it worked.

Can you work with our current engineering team?

Yes. We can agree on a focused area of responsibility, review conventions, and handover expectations so the work fits your team's existing process.

What if the application has limited test coverage?

We identify the behavior most exposed to the planned change and add focused checks where feasible. Missing coverage and deployment constraints are recorded as risks rather than hidden behind a blanket assurance.
